Important U.S. facts:
• Approximately 214,640 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year – including 1,720 men.
• 40,970 women and 460 men will die from the disease annually.
• One person is diagnosed approximately every 3 minutes, and one person dies of breast cancer approximately every 14 minutes
• People over the age of 50 account for 77% of breast cancer cases.
• Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Hispanic women and is the leading cause of cancer deaths among this group.
• Breast cancer is the most common cancer among African-American women, but ranks second to lung cancer in cause of cancer deaths.
• White, non-Hispanic women are more likely to develop breast
• cancer but African-American women are more likely to die from it.

The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, a program of the Avon Foundation, began in 1993. Its mission is to provide women, particularly those who are medically underserved, with direct access to breast cancer education and early detection screening services such as mammograms and clinical breast exams. In 2000, Avon expanded the crusade by funding:
• Community outreach and referral programs.
• Support services for breast cancer patients and survivors, including financial assistance for biopsies for uninsured women, counseling, transportation, child care, and more.
• Educational seminars that teach the "science" of breast cancer and methods of effective advocacy.• Medical research on breast cancer.
